Natvar Bhavsar Biography

Natvar Bhavsar, an Indian-American artist, has established himself as a significant figure in the abstract expressionist and color field movements. Born in 1934 in Gothva village, Gujarat, India, Bhavsar's journey into the realms of art began early in his life. His father, a headmaster who also boarded students, and his mother, from a family with a rich cultural background, provided a nurturing environment for his artistic inclinations. By the age of 19, Bhavsar had already begun training in visual art and excelled in a state-level drawing exam. His academic pursuits led him to earn a BA from Gujarat University in Amdavad, India, in 1960, before moving to the United States in 1962 to further his education in art. Bhavsar's arrival in the United States marked the beginning of an expansive career that would see him become a central figure in New York's art world. He pursued an MFA at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, University of Pennsylvania, PA, where he graduated in 1965. It was during this period that Bhavsar was exposed to the avant-garde creative people of the time, including renowned Italian artists Professor Piero Dorazio and Professor Angelo Savelli, Otto Piene of the Zero Group, and architect Louis Kahn. This exposure played a crucial role in shaping his artistic direction. Upon graduation, Bhavsar was awarded the prestigious John D. Rockefeller III grant, which further facilitated his artistic endeavors. Bhavsar's work is best known for its pure-pigment paintings, where colors are treated as entities that reverberate with rhythm, much like sounds. This unique approach to color and form has been influenced by his Indian heritage, particularly Hinduism's guidance on the use of colors, as well as his experiences in the United States. Despite moving to New York in the 1960s and being a contemporary of Abstract Expressionist painters, Bhavsar's cultural roots continued to inform his work, blending the spiritual and the physical in a harmonious interplay that defines his artistic output. Throughout his career, Bhavsar has exhibited widely, both in New York and internationally, becoming one of the few remaining original artists from the SoHo artists' community. His exhibitions have been celebrated for their exploration of color and form, with over 30 paintings and drawings made from the 1960s to the present being showcased in retrospectives such as “NATVAR BHAVSAR: Five Decades” at Cara Gallery in New York. Bhavsar's art has been acquired by passionate individuals, major corporations for their boardrooms, and, although to a lesser extent, museums. He has expressed a desire to see more of his work in museum collections, as well as in his birth country, India, where his art has been relatively less experienced. Bhavsar's artistic journey has been marked by memorable trips and interactions that have enriched his creative process. He has traveled extensively with his family to Europe and India, visiting great museums and archeological sites such as the caves of Ajanta and Ellora, which have become cherished places for him. His first studio in New York was located at 80 West 3rd Street, right behind the Judson Church on Washington Square Park, a hub for cultural and political dialogues at the time. This environment facilitated his interactions with major contributors to the art world, including Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, Adolf Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell, Clement Greenberg, and many more, fostering a rich exchange of ideas that influenced his work. Bhavsar's philosophy on art is deeply intertwined with his spiritual beliefs. He views art as a spiritual process, a manifestation of consciousness where the physical and spiritual are interdependent. This perspective is reflected in his non-representational paintings, which invite viewers to engage in reflection, introspection, and meditation. Bhavsar's work, therefore, transcends the visual to touch upon the spiritual, offering a unique experience that is both personal and universal. In his personal life, Bhavsar married American artist and photographer Janet Brosious Bhavsar in 1978, and they have twin sons. The couple met in the art world, sharing a life filled with creativity and artistic exploration. Bhavsar's contributions to the art world have been recognized with honors and awards, including the Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation Award in 2010, marking his significant impact on contemporary art. Natvar Bhavsar's artistic legacy is a testament to the power of color, form, and spirituality in creating works that resonate with audiences across cultures and generations. His dedication to his craft and his continuous exploration of the limitless possibilities of art make him a true visionary in the field of abstract expressionism and color field art.
